St. Augustine's Press

The magnificent Bible of Borso d’Este is one of the greatest achievements of Italian manuscript illumination. For more than six years, from 1455 to 1461, a team of artists headed by Taddeo Crivelli and Franco dei Russi completely decorated this large, two-volume work. Prior to the invention of the printing press, important books were written by hand and decorated – illuminated – with paintings and ornaments.

Based on the 2006 Calendar in book form, The Illuminated Year features twelve full-color pages from the d’Este Bible. These are incipit pages, the opening pages of chapters or sections decorated with elaborately decorated capital letters and illustrations. Relevant passages from both the Old and New Testaments bring word and image together to form a more complete understanding of the scriptural text.

In addition to commentary on the 12 main illustrations, the book includes an essay by Francis Fletcher, ma, about the production of this important manuscript and the artists responsible for its illumination, including Taddeo Crivelli, one of the founders of the Ferrarese school of manuscript illumination. Mr. Fletcher is a Doctoral Candidate in the Art History Department at Rutgers University. His research interests include the work of Andrea Mantegna, northern Italian painting and the court culture of Mantua and Ferrara.
