St. Augustine's Press

Rev. John Leies’s Handbook on Critical Life Issues remains the best-selling volume of The National Catholic Bioethics Center. Now in its third edition, the book is specially designed for use in an introductory bioethics course at either the advanced high school level or first-year college. There are review questions and topics for discussion at the end of each chapter for use by the students.

Father Leies begins with a philosophical discussion on the nature of the human
person, as understood by faith and reason, emphasizing the sacred character of the
person and the mystery of human suffering. He turns next to the legalization of
abortion, the rise of modern reproductive technologies, and the troubling issue of stem cell research. Later chapters reflect on controversies surrounding the determination of death, the licit donating of organs, and decision-making about the withdrawal of life support. Several exceptionally difficult cases concerning withdrawal of life support are presented in an appendix, which also includes the documents Donum vitae (The Gift of Life) and the Declaration on Euthanasia.

The text is written in an authoritative manner that is geared for the average student.
Father Leies includes many interesting stories and analogies. This is a great textbook for the classroom setting.

Rev. John Leies is Professor of Philosophy at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio,
Texas and a former president of that institution.
